CHARLOTTE, N.C. – On Thursday, the City of Charlotte commenced construction on Firehouse 44, a modern facility set to serve the expanding River District in western Charlotte. This 14,000 square-foot fire station will be located on Dixie River Road.
The building is designed to be fully electric, incorporating geothermal climate systems and solar panels to achieve a zero carbon footprint. Firefighters have been using a temporary station nearby, having responded to over 1,500 emergency calls since the start of the year. Charlotte Fire Department Chief Reginald Johnson emphasized the importance of the new facility, stating that it will enhance their ability to respond promptly to emergencies, such as home fires, medical crises, or serious accidents. Notably, Firehouse 44 will also be the first mass timber firehouse in the southeast, utilizing a strong and sustainable building material.
