CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Federal detainees awaiting trials in the region will be placed in the Mecklenburg County Jail located in Uptown, as well as the newly reopened Jail North. This development aims to facilitate faster court processes by keeping detainees close to their legal representatives and trial locations.
Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden expressed optimism about the initiative, stating, “I think this is a huge step. Programs, they’re gonna be involving programs. We are gonna help them become better citizens when they get back to wherever they come from.” Additionally, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, Russ Ferguson, explained that the federal government will cover costs related to housing these detainees, similar to a hotel arrangement, ensuring funds now support local jail operations.
