Failed TN execution draws attention to 122 people on Death Row in NC

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The unsuccessful execution attempt of Christa Pike in Tennessee has reignited discussions on capital punishment across the United States. Reports indicate that there are presently 122 inmates on death row in North Carolina.

Noel Nickle, the executive director of the North Carolina Coalition for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, criticized capital punishment as immoral. She remarked that the failed execution demonstrated its inhumanity and emphasized that executions should not resume in North Carolina. Following the incident, Tennessee’s Governor initiated an inquiry into the execution methods, as Pike had survived after being administered lethal injection drugs twice.

In North Carolina, the district attorney in Mecklenburg County is pursuing the death penalty against Tonya McKnight in connection with the tragic death of six-year-old Dominique Moody.

Additionally, changes to the death penalty were made in response to the stabbing of Iryna Zarutska, allowing electrocution and firing squads as execution methods.

As World Day Against The Death Penalty approaches on October 10th, the NCCADP will host a virtual event titled Stories for Life, Across the Divide, featuring conversations with individuals affected by violence and capital punishment.
