CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Governor Josh Stein is anticipated to endorse the Relief at the Pump Act, which will temporarily suspend North Carolina’s gas tax. Currently, the average gas price in the state is reported at $4.12 per gallon, with diesel at $5.99, according to AAA.
During a special session in Raleigh, state lawmakers voted to halt the gas tax, usually an additional 41 cents per gallon, until November 30th. Several residents expressed concerns over high fuel prices and the need for long-term solutions. Representative Jordan Lopez criticized the Republican-led initiative as superficial, suggesting that the suspension could have occurred earlier. Conversely, Republican Representative Donnie Loftis, who sponsored the bill, highlighted that the real impact on prices may take time as current fuel supplies get depleted and fresh shipments come in after the governor’s approval.
